Officer's Report |
Hello
everyone! We've had an exciting start to 2009 and we hope
to keep it a very successful year for AWCH.
It
is with great pleasure that I welcome our new Patron, Her
Excellency Ms Quentin Bryce AC Governor-General of the Commonwealth
of Australia.
Her
Excellency represented AWCH from 1978-1981 as the first
National President and received an AO in 1988 for her services
to the community in particular women and children.
Ms
Bryce recognises the vital role the family plays in supporting
children and young people receiving healthcare. She is passionate
and a firm supporter of children's healthcare and was active
in bringing about change in hospital and health services
for children and young people.
We
are indeed fortunate to have Her Excellency as our Patron
and to have her support at a time when we need to continue
to highlight and advocate for the improved healthcare of
infants, children, young people and their families in Australia.
Ward
Grandparent Volunteers and Seniors Week in NSW

AWCH
and the Ward Grandparent Scheme joined in the events of
NSW Seniors Week during March 2009.
We
got off to a cracking start on Monday 16 March. AWCH was
presented with a NSW Seniors Week Achievement Award
in the Community Service/Volunteering category www.nswseniorsweek.com.au/
Professor
David Bennett and the longest serving ward grandparent,
Dot Tanner from Sydney Childrens Hospital, accepted
the award on behalf of AWCH. Dot has been volunteering since
1988.
As
part of Seniors Week, AWCH organised a training day
for ward grandparents. Eleven volunteers based in Sydney
and Gosford jumped on a bus and headed for John Hunter Hospital
in Newcastle for a much anticipated visit to meet with the
Kaleidoscope ward grandparent volunteers at JHH.
Details
about our trip are on the Ward
Grandparent Scheme report of this newsletter.
AWCH
would like to thank the Department of Ageing, Disability
& Home Care www.dadhc.nsw.gov.au
for providing funding for the coach trip and Kaleidoscope
Social Work Department for hosting the event.

provoking forum in conjunction with Children's Hospital

about the conference content and organisation.
