A call to become a member of AWCHThe Australian Association for the Wellbeing of Children in Healthcare (AWCH) is a national not-for-profit organisation of parents and professionals advocating for the needs of children, young people and their families within the health care system in Australia. AWCH focuses upon the psycho-social needs of children and young people, and is involved in education, advocacy, information provision, support to families and health professionals, as well as research and consultation. AWCH advocates a holistic family oriented approach to the care of children, acknowledging the vital role the whole family plays in aiding the child during acute or chronic illness and in recovery. Why should I become a member?For the last 39 years AWCH has played a vital role in improving the non medical needs of children and young people who experience the health care system. AWCH has been instrumental in the many advances made in the psycho-social care of children in hospitals during the 1970s, including parents staying over in hospital with their children, open visiting hours, recognition of the importance of play and education facilities, and increased parental involvement in all aspects of their child’s hospital care. What's New~ Useful Links ~ Good Beginnings provides free early childhood and practical parenting programs for children and families across Australia, based at their Early Years Centres or visits to your home. 22 November 2011 AWCH attended the Youth Health2011 – It’s Totally Important Conference in November in Sydney. The conference ran over 3 days and was a wonderful mix of professionals and young people coming together to discuss youth health. AWCH jointly hosted a pre-conference workshop which had a morning session discussing the rights of young people in healthcare and the standards required to protect those rights followed in the afternoon with presentations and discussion about training and workforce development in adolescent healthcare.
