This Is Not A Kid-Friendly Policy
Just how many kids are still locked up? The clock is ticking on Chris Bowen's commitment to get kids out of immigration detention by June.

Detention statistics - Australia's littlest prisoners
Statistics as of 15 April 2011 from DIAC - There were 1048 children (aged under 18 years) in immigration detention: 156 were detained in the community under residence determinations, 742 were in alternative temporary detention, 24 were in immigration residential housing and 126 were in immigration transit accommodation. 658 of those children are detained on Christmas Island.

AWCH is urging you to join the GetUp campaign to end the shameful practice of keeping refugee children in detention. Take action and contact the Prime Minister Julia Gillard and Immigration Minister Chris Bowen MP and call for an end to this policy.

World Rare Disease Day is a global event held annually on the last day of February.

Its main objective is to raise awareness of rare diseases and their impact on not only the kids living with them and their families, but also on the wider community as a whole.

The Consumers Health Forum of Australia is currently conducting a project on Quality Use of Medicines among Young People.

Part of this project involves an online survey of individuals 17 years old or younger (focussing on young people aged 10 17 years of age) with the aim of gathering information about their attitudes and behaviours regarding medicines and medicine use.

AWCH attended an event in Sydney’s Martin Place on February 29th that marks World Rare Disease Day 2012.

AWCH attended the Youth Health2011 – It’s Totally Important Conference in November in Sydney.

The conference ran over 3 days and was a wonderful mix of professionals and young people coming together to discuss youth health.

AWCH jointly hosted a pre-conference workshop which had a morning session discussing the rights of young people in healthcare and the standards required to protect those rights followed in the afternoon with presentations and discussion about training and workforce development in adolescent healthcare.

AWCH organised an event to promote Mental Health Month by taking our Hospital Ward Grandparent volunteers and office volunteers on a Fish 'n' Ships tour.
The event showcased the importance of volunteering and its benefits to support and enhance a person’s wellbeing.
