In seeking to ensure that the unique psychological and social needs of children and young people in Australia’s health care system are recognised and met, the Association for the Wellbeing of Children in Healthcare (AWCH) advocates for:

minimisation of the potential distress caused by a health care experience

negotiation of family involvement in a child’s health care

provision of equipment and facilities to enable parents to support their child during a health care experience
-
child-centred and family-focussed communication between children, families and health professionals
-
recognition of cultural and ethnic differences in the provision of children’s health care
-
developmentally appropriate play and education in a health care setting
-
available and timely access by parent/carers and health professionals to health, disease, and illness-related information
-
safe, secure, and child/adolescent friendly health care environments
-
appropriately trained staff in health care environments
-
ongoing education and professional development for practising health care professionals and students working with children and young people.
